Course EE-1 :Introduction

In this section we'll defines three basic items, which we use continually without knowing their meaning despite the importance of these items for any designer , these items are as follows:

1.     Design
2.     Power Systems
3.     Light current systems

This has happened to me once while I was with a group of junior engineers in a site meeting .so, I take the opportunity and asked them; how you think about the process of learning and practicing the design?

In fact, the answers were different, but most decided that the process is difficult and need a lot of efforts and time.

After that, I asked them another question said; can you give me a precise definition of the term "design "?

It was a surprise; Answers contradicted each other, some of them can be considered as nonsense answer.

Now can I ask you the same question, what is the process of design?

Simply it is the process which is carried out by the designer to apply sets of binding rules or procedures in the transportation and distribution of electric power in buildings to special building, facility or a particular project under design achieving the highest levels of safety for the users of this facility.

This definition is what I call it the basic or simplified definition of" the design process".

Hence you will ask me if there is another definition of the design process.
Yes, of course, there is a professional definition of the design process as follows:

"The process carried out by the designer to apply sets of binding rules or procedures in the transportation and distribution of electric power in buildings to special building, facility or a particular project under design achieving the highest levels of safety for the users of this facility and achieving  balance between aspects of the design and the project cost taking into account all environmental impacts and aspects to create innovative, attractive design which providing highest level of user comfort with aesthetic touch "

Here comes the question: could this definition  be applicable? How to implement it? Is it possible to explain more?

I will give answers to those questions in detail but in the next topics.

Please, Stay connected and do not forget to post your comments.

In the next topic, we will come to another definition of the term "power systems".

Now let us see what is the difference between a professional and non-professional designer?

During many years of my experience in the field of design and execution of electrical works, I noticed that the differences between professional non-professional designer are as follows:

firstly, The professional designer is aware of the design process concept, he knows its environmental, economic and aesthetic impacts, he also knows the technical requirements needed for creating innovative design superior to any another design for the same project.

While I find that the non-professional designer has a narrow view for the design process revolves around collection of certain data and conducting a range of consecutive steps and make certain calculations for getting his preliminary design, which can be similar to the one done by any beginner engineer.

secondly ,That Professional Designer collect and analyze lots of related and influential data in the creation of the design criteria of the  project ,Sometimes it is keen to visit the project site and explore the area around it, in addition  he held meetings with all parties involved in the project to verify the collected data.

But I find that the non-professional designer take care only about collecting Some data necessary for making certain calculations and these data often be obtained from other parties without verifying or making data analysis.

Thirdly, the professional designer will hold a series of studies for getting the most professional design being suitable for all project data, constraints, and environmental, economic and architectural requirements. he perform also other studies to evaluate the initial design through making design alternatives by applying the value engineering science, in addition to make energy auditing for project minimizing energy losses and cost.

While I find that non- professional designer didn't try to evaluate his preliminary design and he think that this design does not need previews any more.

Fourthly, the professional designer creates a new design every time for the same project type.

While the non-professional designer make designs generally being copy and paste from previous design for the same project type.

Fifthly, the professional designer produces professional documents which contain the smallest details in a arranged and logical manner.

While the designs made by non-professional designer generally do not contain precise details and will not be arranged or organized or logical documents.

Last, the professional designer and read about everything related to electricity and regulations keeping in touch with the new market products and the new modern technology.

While the non-professional designer didn’t read and follow the new trends in electricity and he rarely seek for new information unless he was forced to deal with new system or equipments for the first time.

at the end , I Hope that all of you being professional designers.

  10. Dear Ali Hassan,
I really like to thankyou for your best endeavors to share your professional experience and knowledge. For past 3-4 months, I have been trying to learn professional electrical design to get into this field but the difficulty i was encountering was that the courses are really expensive and secondly i have to have some a lot of spare time to join classes.
We can pray for you that Almighty Allah gives you more knowledge and success in your life.
Your deeds is really really appreciable.
